The Mental Health Media Awards celebrate the best portrayal of mental distress and reporting of mental health issues in the print and broadcast media. This year’s awards - Nov 2008 - were held at BAFTA in London, and presented by comedienne Ruby Wax who spoke openly and very humorously about her depression, inviting people to visit the BBC website she hosts called Headroom. GIFTED won the radio drama category. An adaptation of Nikita Lalwani’s prize-winning debut novel, it is a story about 15 year old Rumi, a talented mathematician with a place at Oxford whose real battle is to escape her family. Both tragic and comic, GIFTED is a coming of age story seen through the lens of immigration, race, maths and sex.
